Why should I enroll myself/my child in martial arts classes?Reason 1: It's good for your mind. Compass Martial Arts teaches good life practices such as fair play, following rules, self discipline, respectful attitude, good citizenship, sportsmanlike conduct and self confidence. Reason 2: It's good for you! Along with teaching good life practices the study of martial arts is a workout. Class begins with a warm up and with techniques that get the blood pumping and keep you active for the entire class period. Students tend to find that their aggression/frustration levels drop and their endorphin levels rise as a direct result of the physical workout involved with martial arts training. Reason 3: It's safe! Martial arts is one of the safest physical sports one can enjoy. There are far less serious injuries per capita in martial arts each year than in Football, Baseball, Basketball, Soccer, Gymnastics, etc. Even cheerleading has more annual injuries than martial arts. The focus in martial arts is on self control and using one's knowledge only in defense of one's self or the defense of others.

I'm an adult, can I take a class?Absolutely yes! You can and should take a class. While our only class specifically for adults is midday we do run a program that is very adult friendly. Compass Martial Arts is an ability based program. This means that students are advanced based on how well they master the techniques and principles being taught. This allows students to learn and advance at their own pace. Each class is comprised of a range of age groups. This teaches older teens and adults to control their techniques and teaches younger students to have the confidence to stand up for themselves.

I am overweight/have a chronic injury. Will I be able to keep up with classes. The short answer is yes. The long answer is: Our program is ability based and each student will get out of it what they are willing/able to put in. While we encourage our students to improve themselves both mentally and physically there is no hard push to achieve rank or work to the level of the most physically fit students. We will be willing to work out a plan for any students looking to lose weight or reach a higher level of fitness on an individual basis.

I want my child to learn discipline. Is your program a good place for that.Yes and No. Martial arts classes can definitely help with teaching discipline. However, discipline starts in the home at the parental level. We will be happy to work with you to set boundaries and goals/rewards to help your child/self to be better disciplined but our lessons will only be effective if they are taken in concert with similar teachings at home.

Will you help my child/me lose weight?I will be happy to work with you to help your child/self become healthy. That said, just coming to the class will not do that. Weight loss/healthy life choices requires a full lifestyle change. We can advise you on how to do that but just coming to a class will not do it.
